Sudan death toll nears 100 as clashes continue
The death toll from the fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has risen to 97, with nearly 600 others injured, according to The Washington Post citing the Sudanese Doctors Union.
The violence in the capital city of Khartoum has caused widespread panic, with reports of explosions and battles heard throughout the night.
The tensions stem from a disagreement between the military, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the RSF, headed by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, about how the paramilitary force should be integrated into the armed forces and what authority should oversee that process, according to Al Jazeera.
The military had promised to cede control to a civilian-led government this month, but the process has been marred by the rivalry between the two generals.
The clash also resulted in the death of three staff members of the United Nations World Food Programme on Saturday, prompting the agency to temporarily halt all operations in the region. Executive Director Cindy McCain has called for all parties to ensure the safety and security of humanitarian workers on the ground and enable the continued delivery of life-saving aid to the people of Sudan.
